Modern development and heritage preservation

Lilydale’s commitment to preserving its past can be seen in various restoration projects and conservation efforts.

Key heritage projects:

  • Lilydale Falls Reserve – Maintained as a protected natural landmark.
  • The Council Chambers (now The Courthouse, housing the Makers at the Courthouse craft and gift gallery) – Preserved as an historic public building.
  • Bardenhagen’s Store – One of the first brick buildings in Lilydale, still standing, still operating as a general store and supermarket.
  • Old railway infrastructure – Though no longer in use, efforts have been made to preserve remnants of the Northeastern Railway. There is an active proposal to create a rail trail between the Lilydale Falls and Scottsdale for cyclists and pedestrians. The Launceston and Northeast Railway group is also working to provide rail experiences between Turners March and the old Lilydale Station.

Ways the community has contributed:

✅ Heritage Lilydale – Local historians and volunteers research and document Lilydale’s past.
✅ Lilydale RSL and Memorial Gardens – Maintained by the community to honor servicemen and women.
✅ Preservation of historic buildings – Many original structures have been kept intact or restored.
